Sending physical wedding invitations may feel old-school, but it’s also one of the most beautiful parts of your planning process. If you’re investing in paper goods and mailing them the traditional way, here’s what you need to know to avoid damage—and ensure a smooth, stylish delivery.

Weigh and Measure Before You Buy Stamps

Wedding invites can be bulky—especially if they include multiple enclosures, ribbon, or wax seals. Before buying stamps, take a fully assembled suite to the post office to:

  • Get the correct postage

  • Avoid underpayment returns or delays

Consider Hand Canceling

Hand canceling means your envelope bypasses some of the sorting machines and is stamped by hand. This reduces damage (and smudging) caused by machinery.

  • Ask your local post office if they offer hand canceling

  • Be polite—they aren’t required to do it, but many will

  • Bring your invitations already stamped and sealed

Be Cautious with Wax Seals

Wax seals are gorgeous but can be problematic in machines. If you’re using them:

  • Place the seal inside the envelope (rather than on the outside)

  • Use hand canceling to reduce the risk of ripping

  • Consider adhesive wax seal stickers instead of traditional wax

Use Outer Envelopes or Protective Sleeves

To protect your beautifully styled invites, consider:

  • A vellum wrap

  • Inner and outer envelope pairings

  • Clear sleeves or parchment inserts

Don’t Skip the Return Address

Use a custom return address stamp or printable label. It makes returns easier and keeps things polished.

Send One to Yourself First

Mail one full invitation to yourself. This test run ensures:

  • It arrives looking intact

  • The postage is correct

  • You see exactly what guests will experience

Final Thought

Mailing your invites doesn’t have to be complicated. With a little prep—and a trip to the post office—you can ensure your invitations arrive safely and beautifully, setting the perfect tone for your celebration.
